If we told you that volunteering two hours of your time to package our meals could result in enough meals to feed a child for a whole year, would you believe it? And that you can have lots of fun while doing it?
It’s true. While Kids Against Hunger’s main objective is to provide meals for starving children, we believe it is also essential to involve the local community where the meals are packaged. Whether we like it or not, we live in a culture of instant gratification. Through its volunteer-driven effort, Kids Against Hunger is able to mobilize the energy of Americans of all ages on behalf of starving children worldwide, and to satisfy their desire to be a part of something meaningful, something larger than themselves.
When volunteering at one of Kids Against Hunger’s many locations, children learn about world hunger, to look beyond themselves, and that it is possible to accomplish seemingly overwhelming tasks if they are willing to work together. At the same time, these “leaders of tomorrow” discover the importance of service and how everyone can be involved in some way helping others. This enforces in a very tangible way Kids Against Hunger’s motto: “When you feed a child, you feed our future ”.
Packaging food is a wonderful, fulfilling way to feel that you are making a real difference! Because you are! You can see the progress with each bag you package and box up. From the very young to senior citizens, any group can be involved in this simple, manual process. However, since the demand for food packaging sessions generally exceeds the financial resources of many satellites, we urge volunteers to make fundraising a part of their volunteer activity. During a two-hour food packaging session, each volunteer can easily package two boxes worth of food – or 432 meals! At a program cost of $0.23 or more (varies among locations), that equals almost $100 worth of ingredients. We realize that the donation of your time is very valuable, and do not want to turn anyone away for lack of funding, but if you are able to help in this way, please do.
Volunteer opportunities and hours of operation vary from one Kids Against Hunger location to the next. To schedule a food packaging session please contact us.
